Robert C. Shapiro Named Radio Club of America Fellow

WASHINGTON, November 21, 2009—The National Public Safety Telecommunications Council’s (NPSTC) Governing Board recently awarded its fourth annual Richard DeMello Award to Donald E. Root, Jr., assistant manager of the Wireless Services Division for the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. The award, sponsored by EADS Secure Networks North America, was presented at the Radio Club of America's (RCA) recent 100th anniversary gala celebration.

Mr. Root has wide-ranging experience in public safety telecommunications and warning systems governance, design, implementation, and operations. He currently manages operations for the San Diego County – Imperial County Regional Communications System.

“The Radio Club of America provides valuable historical research and training and fosters collaboration in the field of radio communications,” said Steve Shanck, vice president and general manager of EADS Secure Networks P25 land mobile radio business. “We are proud to do our part in sponsoring the DeMello award and honoring the work of Mr. Root.”

Since 2006, NPSTC has bestowed the annual DeMello award on the public safety communications person who has demonstrated the highest levels of personal and professional conduct and performance in the local, state, and national public safety communications arena. It is named for Richard DeMello, one of the founding fathers of NPSTC and a member of the Radio Club of America.

Also at the RCA gala, Robert C. Shapiro, P.E., senior manager of systems engineering at EADS North America, was named RCA Fellow. Mr. Shapiro was honored for his 25 years as a dedicated land mobile radio professional, his many volunteer efforts, and his contributions to the industry. Mr. Shapiro currently chairs the Technical Education Working Group for NPSTC.

“We are very proud of this recognition of Bob’s dedication and work, especially as the designation of RCA Fellow is only conferred upon a handful of members each year,” said Shanck. “Receiving the recognition this year was especially meaningful since this is the 100th anniversary of the RCA.”
